Fixing my bouncy coilovers Pt. 2

If you are new to the blog and haven’t read Part 1, I recommend you check it out here.

I have put a lot of love into this story so I hope that you enjoy taking the time to read this!

Let me start off by saying that I have found the source to my issue and I am very happy to share it with everyone who is currently having trouble with their coilovers. You may have purchased them from a third-party seller, may have bought them from eBay, or purchased off of a forum – either way, you can never be too careful. I was lucky enough to purchase my Tein Street Basis Z coilovers on a reseller that sold the coilovers with the top-hats included for an amazing price. Almost $200 off the retail price, as it was on sale.

In the back of my mind, I thought it was to good to be true but I want to give it a try. They came in the original Tein box with no dents on the packaging. Unfortunately, this was one of my very few purchases of mods to my car and didn’t know much about them. I’m here to warn those who were willing to research before purchasing (or installing).

Issue: Ride was bouncy – felt like I was imitating a basketball. Normally bumps felt smooth – it’s the bouncing after the bump that makes the ride irritating. Even on smooth roads, I feel every little bounce and it dampens as I speed up.

Situation:

Fix: In order to fix your bounce, the top perch must be secure and non-flimsy. This requires the following tools:

– Spanner Wrench (1): Only one is needed to the hold the top perch from moving or spinning while adjusting

– 21mm 1/2 inch deep Socket: this is needed to tighten the top-center shaft nut for the 2013-2016 FR-S (Socket size may vary for different car models)

Optional: Torque wrench: There isn’t a specific torque that was provided for specification; however, I have estimated about 20-25 ft/lb of torque being used (non-accurate measurement).

Coilover diagram

Jack up the car and remove the front wheels. Once the wheels are removed, open the hood of your car to begin the process of tightening the top perch of the coilover.

While holding the top perch with the Spanner Wrench, use a ratchet or torque wrench to tighten the top-cent shaft nut. Once torqued, you will feel resistance. Tighten to snug, do not over-torque.

Repeat the same process to the passenger side coilovers to ensure balance. Once complete, replace wheels back onto the car and allow the car a couple of minutes for the coilovers to set. Give a test drive and feel the difference of how smooth it is compared to the bounce it had before. Trust me, this relieved so much stress in my life. However, the process was very fun to figure out.

Once complete, your top perch should look similar to this:

Your bouncy issues should be fixed! Please be aware that normal bumps will be felt due to the works of the coilover and spring (a good thing) and shouldn’t have an excessive bounce after contact. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me and I will help/answer any questions you may have.

Disclaimer: I am not liable for any damage or injuries caused with the modification of your car. This post was made from personal experience and should be read as a guidance and not professional work. I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL. I complete work on my own car and I understand the risks. I undergo a lot of research and speak with Tein customer service for all of my findings.

Just in time for Halloween

I had a wonderful time with my girlfriend this weekend! I had dinner with her family, had plenty of time to study, and even fit in time to finally take care of the “bouncing” issue my car had.

I do apologize for the lack of posts, I have been using a lot of time to work on my programming and I have done more work in two weeks than I could ever do in a semester in class. Needless to say, I have plenty of stories to tell.

I hope everyone has been enjoying life so far and thank you for your patience!

Unlucky camper

Let’s start off by saying that I’m a proficient driver and this event was avoided but fate had its own way of saying “Nah bro.”

Jumps right in front of my car. At first, it seemed very easy to believe that I just ran it over and that was it. As soon as I got home, I was curious if I received any damage and unfortunately I did. My foglight popped right out of the socket, the bezel was completely missing, and my turn signal bulb popped out from the fuse. At 3 in the morning, I could not process this all at once. I woke up the next morning and was able to find a solution.

I purchased new cheap foglights to replace the old ones and will only replace the foglight enclosures. Think of it as a foglight brand collaboration. I believe it will work but we will have to see. This Friday is when the new foglights come in and I will find out if it works. Worst of all, this happened on a Monday.

Scared and deserve it.

My wake up call of a lifetime. Many awkward conversations. One realization. People don’t deserve negativity in life, no matter who you are.

Love and positivity is what this world needs. It starts with decisions in life. These decisions should not be taken lightly. Bad decision can create unnecessary situations. I try to make the best decisions in life with what I have. Somehow, I feel as if I do no good. I wish of a better day, today. I’ll feel better in time. I just need to get through this current speedbump.

Aram’s Army

Happy birthday, brother. I have to tell you, things are looking up and life is getting a bit easier every day. I remember you talking about many things you wanted to do growing up – it’s like you wanted to change the world. It’s a little rough down here and it surely will need a bit of change from what’s going on but I’m sure you know that.

Remember when we tried to fix that radio/gps during Outdoor Ed, we got lost, and pretty much just tossed it to the ground and tried to figure our way back to camp? Yeah, that’s pretty much the rut that we are in right now.

Other than that, work is looking great and I’m planning to have my girlfriend move in very soon. She cares about me a lot, and I love her so much. She keeps me sane. You would like her.

I hope you have a wonderful day and enjoy lots of cake. We all miss you bud.

Saying Goodbye

It’s a little weird, moving from job to job so quickly. I was just getting very close my coworkers and things we finally picking up after many ideas and decisions.

Things are looking up for the progress of my career. I get to work at a Fortune 500 company everyday, I have a beautiful girlfriend that supports me every step of the way – going the extra mile by getting her degree and working at the same time, a tough, motivating family that has my back, and you, the reader.

My stories are meant to tell you my experiences of life. What I have gone through or am going through, which may hopefully help those that are trying to find out what to do. It’s not an easy process, believe me. Especially without a degree, but this is where you have to pick it up 100 times more.

I’m blessed, and so should you. You have a chance to live, plenty of time to succeed, and lots of room for error. But hey. I’m just getting started.

Opportunities can come out of nowhere

It’s been a rough few weeks since I have heard about the layoffs at my job. I’m applying left and right, and luckily I got a text from an old friend that interned with me at Discovery. She told me that our old boss was talking about me and was wondering what I was up to. She continued to announce that he had a bit of work for me and wanted to see if I was interested. Obviously, I was.

Its crazy to know that I was on the brink of freaking out because of the constant search for other work opportunities. I guess this is God’s way of saying “Take it easy man. You are still young.” I smiled as I saw the message.

Nonetheless, this is still just an opportunity that will hopefully provide a higher salary for the work. Of course, if I am not blessed with higher pay – I must make the decision to continue my search or to bite the bullet and take the job. In my mind, I am more confident to find better opportunities for similar or more pay if this opportunity is unable to provide that for me. Lets hope that this one is a keeper.

Be open to decisions and understand

You will experience forms of negativity throughout your life. You will be afraid and that’s okay. There are others that share the same experience. Unfortunately, very few suppress the negativity. Instead, they reinforce it. There is no benefit. There is no purpose. There is only disappointment. You will never understand why it “needs” to be reinforced.

Fuck them. It’s cancer; how these people exist and think it is okay. Don’t confuse negativity with criticism or debate. There are always improvements that are necessary or valid points that are being made. But, to those who just think that everything you know or do is what everyone wants or thinks – that’s sad.

Not everything I say or do is correct. That’s okay, I’m open to hear what people think. I will try to understand you, as you, hopefully, try to understand me, and this is where a decision can develop. You can still choose to support your side, or you can choose the other. Either way, there is no wrong answer as long as you respect those who don’t have the same choice as you do. This shouldn’t result in hatred, fear, anger, or any correlated feelings. Just understand, and be able to move on. It’s okay. You have finally begun to understand why someone doesn’t want what you want.

Lets move away from negativity.

Decisions. Sometimes hard to make, many times very easy. But have you ever feel a time where you made a decision that you didn’t make yourself? As a kid, choosing your starting 5 when playing basketball at recess, or maybe what type of friends you want to have?

I feel like I was lucky. I met this goofy kid, while working in retail, but we worked different departments. I usually like to say hello to the new people who get hired because it helps with the communication as work (Which is necessary 100% of the time). Who knew that I would end up friends with this guy through a video game; in fact, a game that I never wanted at first. Destiny, on the midnight release, was bigger than I thought. Lots of people came into the store and purchased the game. We happened to sell a lot of energy drinks too (Not surprised). At the end of the shift, my coworkers went to buy their copies and recommended that I should get it. As reluctant as I was, I didn’t want to buy it. However, I somehow became very open to getting the game once I found out almost all of my coworkers had it. So, I said screw it…. and we played 15 hours straight. Dumbest and best decision I ever made.

Back to the goofy kid, we became better friends and was able to get to know his group of friends. The one thing that brought them all together? Cars. Another thing I was skeptical about. I loved cars as a kid and unfortunately lost interest growing up. However, after seeing everyone very happy and proud of the cars they owned, i said screw it… bought a new car the following day and never looked back. Long story short, those group of friends are now my very good friends and it’s nice to share a common interest.

Sure, I did make the decision to do all of these things; However, I also didn’t make any decisions at all – where I pretty much went with the flow. I was open to decision at these times, where I built my own curiosity. The “What if?” thing. Don’t be afraid to go with the flow. Sometimes, a decision is being made in front of you – and you unconsciously force a different decision. Be open to decisions, and understand those decisions. To the decision that you didn’t make, understand that decision and why you didn’t choose that one. Either way, you have made a decision and you continue on with life. Easy processes, no negativity, happy life.

Scooters

Having a great time with these 50cc scooters! For those of you that aren’t familiar to the cc measurement – it isn’t that fast of a scooter. However, it is very fun to ride!

6 of us riding down to Fort Lauderdale and the view is amazing! I wish I stopped by a took a picture but we were on the move.

Best part, all 6 scooters costed less than $200 for the whole day! Groupon is GOAT.

As I lay here, FaceTiming the love of my life – I am missing home. And the fact that I have car parts waiting for me to install once I get back. Tomorrow will be a better day – my older brother’s is growing a year older and that means lots of food and fun! I guess I will say it early, but…. happy birthday big bro!

Family reunion

We made it! It’s not as sunny as we thought it would be. It’s raining. It’s pouring. More or less, there are old men snoring.

The beach house is wonderful, because we are near the shore and say hi to the people to boat down the strip. The best part to this vacation, is that our labradoodle is getting so much attention from tourists and locals. He loves it so much! Crazy enough, he has been spoiled a lot – with a $12 meal as the record so far. But, we love him. He’s family and we all eat good.

Today is a simple day – we travel down to south beach to have lunch with the whole family and take a boat tour of the city. The only thing that can top today, is if Bernice from South Beach Tow comes and we get her autograph!
