Good day, to all that graduated from Harvard University. Congratulations! An achievement like this should be celebrated and rewarded. Even better, those who were able to listen to Mark Zuckerberg give his commencement speech were treated with a blessing.
Knowledge is something that can always be obtained. There is no end to the knowledge that the world possesses for us. However, what is this knowledge worth if it isn’t used to make someone else’s life better? Mark Zuckerburg’s (I’ll refer to him as Mark for the remainder of this story) first quote covers the whole topic of this story:
Create not to make progress,
but to make purpose.– Mark Zuckerberg
It’s natural for us to want something for ourselves. That is our natural instinct. My work, my life, my money. That’s okay.
Mark wanted to capitalize more on the topic but explaining how this generation will have its defining works. I agree, many jobs will soon be automated, will require new skills, and will require much more empathy. What do you mean? It’s fairly clear if you take the time to understand the issue today. The world is changing drastically, as you read – climate change and the rise in discrimination.
Work should always evolve. As we move into a more advanced technological future, there are more discoveries of methods towards making the world a greener place. Solar panels, electric cars, etc. We must move away from the old and bring the new. What’s worse, we could be holding back the key to our future by causation of limitation.
It’s terrible to hear stories of hate, for example, an African American individual being stabbed to death by another Caucasian American, just days before graduation. American. I used one word to declare the identity of these two individuals. Instead of the hate, why can’t we learn to help one another, to succeed as individuals so that we may succeed as a country. Only we, as humans in this world, can build a better world so that our grandchildrens’ children will be able to look back in history and dream for an even better future. To have the opportunities of going to school without descrimination. To have opportunity to work without descrimination. To live without descrimination. In order to make a change, we must be able to work together instead of worrying more about another persons skin color, the way they dress, or the way they speak. To work as one.
At the end of the day, the world will decay with hate unless we change for the better. We can stop the negativity and maybe, just maybe, that one day we will have a solution to problems. The world limits itself when a life is taken, when someone isn’t able to receive an education, or when no opportunists are given. Les brown, an amazingly strong and well-spoken motivational speaker says:
The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hope and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered….

If you have heard this before, this was meant for those who were afraid to take a leap of faith, to get their foot in the door, and to make an effort. But no. I believe this saying goes deeper than just that. Maybe that kid that was stabbed to death could’ve been the man who could change the world – but we will never know because we have created a limitation for him. Stopped him from doing so because his life has experienced an unfortunate end. Stop the limitations, help one another, and learn to make a purpose together.

It can start in our neighborhood, to the cities, and eventually reach to the world. It’s as simple as simple can get. Why do we make it so hard for each other? Why must we teach a younger generation that it’s okay to just take this shit. It’s disgusting and humiliating as a race, the human race, to induce hatred. As I digress, it must be known that it isn’t too late. We can stop it now. Let’s change the world for the good. For the better. Again, great speech Mark. May the world take this message and share your emotions so that one day, we can all feel safe in harmony – in this world.
